Getting to South Shields from:

the A1 North – head south on the A1. Around 6 miles north of Newcastle follow the

signs to the A19 Tyne Tunnel. There is a £1.10 charge for cars. Try to avoid the tunnel during peak times in the morning and evening rush hours. On exiting the tunnel, follow the signs on the roundabout for the A19 and Sunderland. After around 1 mile and at the first junction take the exit signed South Shields and A194. Turn left at the roundabout onto the A194 and head to South Shields.


the A1(M) South – head north on the A1(M). At Washington Services move to the

right hand lane and follow the signs for the A194(M). At the end of the motorway where the A194 and the A184 intersect, continue on A194 to South Shields.


the A19 South – travel past the exits for Sunderland and continue to the roundabout

where A19 and A184 intersect. Continue along the A19 turning off at the second exit after the roundabout. Turn right on the roundabout signed A194 South Shields.

 

the West – follow the signs to the A1 (South) until you pass the Angel of the North

statue on the left. Take the second exit signed Sunderland and the A1231. Stay in the left lane and go straight over the first roundabout. Turn left at the next roundabout and join the A194(M) signed South Shields. At the end of the motorway where the A194 and the A184 intersect, continue on A194 to South Shields.


And Once you are in South Shields:

Follow the A194 dual carriageway into the centre of South Shields over a series of roundabouts. The dual carriageway ends at the roundabout with The Lord Clyde public house on the left. Turn right here and continue along to the end of the road at the T-junction controlled by traffic lights. At these lights you will see the Town Hall in front of you. Keep in the left lane on approach. Turn left at the traffic lights and move into the right lane where you can head through the next set of lights veering to the right. The Town Hall will be on your right. This is Beach Road. Go straight over the next roundabout and Once upon a Tyne is on the left hand side at number 55.
 


Getting to us via Metro train from Newcastle Airport or Newcastle Central Station

The closest Metro Station to Once upon a Tyne is South Shields. The journey is 55 minutes from Newcastle International Airport and 20 minutes from Newcastle upon Tyne. You do not need to change trains. Once upon a Tyne is a five minute walk from South Shields metro station.

Taking the stairs out of the metro station, turn right onto the high street (King Street) and as you approach Barclays bank on the corner on your right, turn right on this corner and follow the road towards the Town Hall turning left just before the Town Hall onto Beach Road. Go straight over the next roundabout and Once upon a Tyne is on the left hand side at number 55.


Directions by hot air balloon

Follow the good vibrations in the air directly to Once upon a Tyne – try not to be distracted by the great coastline and excellent surfing conditions – there is plenty of time for this. When the atmosphere feels the most fun, begin your descent. You can park in our backyard alongside our cars – though watch out for Mabel the hedgehog who sits on our roof, green with envy and very big spikes. Should Mabel accidentally puncture your balloon, we have a hot air balloon first aid kit on site. Please ask at reception. Please note that Mabel does not have public liability insurance.
